At the height of spring, an abundance of berries make their way to the farmers market, including ones that you won’t find in grocery stores. Beyond snacking, fresh strawberries, blackberries, mulberries, and more make for a delicious ingredient in both savory and sweet recipes. 

Wondering what to do with a flat of fresh berries? Start with a recipe from this list, each created and demonstrated by chefs, food makers, and friends of Foodwise. You can also get inspiration from the Seasonal Spotlight booth at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and Mission Community Market, where you can taste recipes and learn more about the wide variety of locally grown berries.

Sara Calvosa Olson’s book, Chími Nu’am, highlights Native culinary traditions with seasonal recipes from across California, including blueberries, which are native to America. Once summer rolls around, you can make this cool soup with half a cup of Sierra Cascade or Triple Delight blueberries, and several Brentwood Diamond cobs from G&S Farms at Foodwise farmers markets.

Love on a Plate – Riblets with a Twist by Brownie Sims, The Final Sauce

Use fresh blackberries as a sweet topping for these barbecue riblets, seasoned with a marinade from The Final Sauce. Brownie and Princess Sims started their business by recreating a well-loved family recipe, eventually expanding to include sauces with many different flavors and spice levels. You can find them popping up at Juneteenth on the Waterfront on June 7.

Spiced Berry and Labneh Bruschetta by Naomi Webb, Foodwise’s Culinary Program Manager

The next time you need a berry-filled appetizer to share, this mixture of labneh, mint, spices, and berries makes a cooling dip for your favorite crackers. This recipe was created for Foodwise’s Seasonal Spotlight program, which allows shoppers to discover recipes made with farmers market fruits and vegetables.

Goat Cheese Ice Cream with Black Raspberry & Pink Peppercorn Jam by Tyler Malek, Salt & Straw

You can have Salt & Straw at home! Recreate their iconic and unique flavors with this recipe that uses either black or red raspberries, which you can pick up from Sunshine Organics at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays. The recipe also allows you to make a little more jam than is needed for the ice cream.

Radish, Rhubarb, and Strawberry Salad by Louisa Shafia, The New Persian Kitchen

In her book, Chef Louisa Shafia reimagines classic Persian recipes and offers surprising ways to prepare familiar ingredients. Louisa writes, “Although Americans tend to think of it as a fruit, rhubarb is a vegetable, mainly used in Iranian cooking to add sourness to savory dishes. Strawberries, which came to Persia from the West, are known as toot farangi, or ‘foreign berry,’ and in this lively salad they temper the rhubarb’s acidic edge.”

MarQuita’s signature preservative- and pectin-free jam is the star of this classic, Southern recipe. Try using Chandler or Albion strawberries from Yerena Farms to make the bulk of your filling, or topping it with tiny Seascape strawberries from Lucero Organic Farms.

Baby and Micro Greens Salad with Strawberry Vinaigrette and Edible Flowers by Naomi Webb, Foodwise’s Culinary Program Manager

This Seasonal Spotlight recipe was made with a light and sweet Strawberry Vinaigrette. About the vinaigrette, Naomi writes, “Strawberries contain more vitamin C than any other berry! A classic serving suggestion for this vinaigrette is on a spinach salad, but it can also be a fruity sauce to serve over grilled chicken.”

Blackberry, Mulberry, and Rose Geranium Dou Hua (Sweet Silken Tofu) by Brandon Jew, Mister Jiu’s

With some patience and frequent stirring, you can make your own sweet silken tofu infused with a syrup made from Pakistani mulberries from Very Mulberry or Frog Hollow Farm, blackberries from Yerena Farms, and rose geranium from McGinnis Ranch, along with soymilk and a coagulant.
