USF Media Studies student Mady McClung joined Foodwise this summer as a Communications Intern, supporting marketing efforts at Alemany Farmers Market, which Foodwise began managing earlier this year. As part of onboarding 70+ farms and businesses, Foodwise is creating individual profiles for each seller to help share the stories of the Alemany community.
Bringing her passion for environmental and social justice, Mady developed profiles for 10 farmers and sellers (such as C&Z Vegetables, Miramonte Farms, and RG Succulents), wrote an article about Urban Organics, and supported our team in other ways, from surveying and counting market shoppers to lending a hand at education programs.
“Mady showed up with a genuine interest and eagerness to learn about the Alemany community, bringing care in interviewing farmers and food makers to help them share their unique stories,” says Communications Director Brie Mazurek. “We’re grateful for her contributions in shining a light on some of the people who make Alemany so special.” Meet Mady.
Where does your interest in food come from?
I am passionate about environmental justice and have been involved in environmental projects for several years. At USF I am pursuing a minor in Environmental Studies, and I learned about the role food systems play in environmentalism through my classes. I was excited that this internship opportunity would give me the opportunity to learn more about sustainable and equitable food systems.
What do you do when you aren’t interning for Foodwise?
I am entering my fourth year at USF as a Media Studies major. I am working for the newspaper and the film organization at USF this year, and was involved with the USF community garden this past semester. This summer I have been enjoying taking short camping trips and exploring hikes around the Bay Area.
Why did you choose to intern with Foodwise this summer?
I was looking for an internship that would give me the opportunity to explore the intersection of my interests in writing and storytelling with environmental justice. Entering into my final year of university, I want to practice my professional communications skills as much as possible before entering the workforce.
What has been most rewarding about your experience with Foodwise?
The most rewarding thing about working with Foodwise has been getting to know the farmers and sellers from Alemany that I have been working with, and knowing that I get to help uplift the inspiring community and help promote these hard-working farmers that have dedicated their lives to providing our community with fresh produce.
What does Foodwise mean to you?
Knowing where your food comes from and who grows it, increasing access to affordable fresh foods, and supporting sustainable food systems.
Any favorite farmers market foods or home meal prep tips you want to share?
My favorite foods from the Alemany Farmers Market this summer have been the pupusas from Estrellita’s Snacks, the salad greens from Two Dog Farm, and any and all stone fruit!
