Volunteer of the Month: Nanako Yano
February 21, 2019
CUESA’s Volunteer of the Month program recognizes the dedication and work of some of our most active volunteers. CUESA relies on volunteers to help with education programs, special events, public outreach, and other activities that help fulfill our mission to cultivate a sustainable food system. Learn more about volunteering and submit an application here. You can also sign up for our next volunteer orientation on April 6, 2019, here!
On a chilly Saturday morning you may find Nanako Yano offering Market Match coins to some of our Ferry Plaza Farmers Market shoppers, helping others find the elusive puntarelle or validate parking tickets for $3 all-day parking among a multitude of other Information Booth tasks. Her love of eating and curiosity about our organization brought Nanako to volunteer with us since 2016.
“Nanako’s long-term volunteer experience has made her handy in all Info Booth situations,” says Katy Burnett, Market Administrator. “Even after years of volunteering, she is always excited to be back in the market. Her warmth, patience, and enthusiasm always give us a lift on Saturdays. She moved away for work for several months last year, and the Market Operations team missed her while she was gone. We were so excited and happy to welcome her back to the Info Booth.” Meet Nanako.
CUESA: Where does your interest in food come from?
Nanako: I just love to eat! The Farmers Market has an abundance of food so it just goes hand in hand.
CUESA: What do you do when you aren’t volunteering for CUESA?
Nanako: I like to go jogging or for a walk, or meet some friends for brunch. It really depends on what I feel like doing at the moment.
CUESA: What is your favorite part about volunteering with CUESA?
Nanako: I meet a lot of inspirational people, and being surrounded by them lifts me up every time.
CUESA: Do you have an insider market tip or a favorite produce item at the market right now?
Nanako: I love mushrooms, so I’m a huge fan of Far West Fungi! I also recently discovered Truffle Cream Sauce from The Pasta Shop. Combine it with super flavorful brown mushroom from Far West Fungi, and you have a dish to die for!
