Volunteer of the Month: Gabe Lefebre

January 9, 2026

Gabe dressed up as a Minion for a Foodwise Kids field trip on Halloween.

Foodwise relies on volunteers and interns to help with education programs and other activities that help fulfill our mission to grow thriving communities through the power and joy of local food. Learn more about internships here and volunteer opportunities here. To learn more about how you can get involved with Foodwise, join us at our Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, January 28.

Gabe Lefebre began volunteering with Foodwise in September 2025, after learning about the organization from his sister Claire, also a volunteer. He’s supported both our Foodwise Kids and Foodwise Teens programs, assisting with elementary school field trips at the farmers market on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and teaching high school students to cook with market ingredients on Saturdays.

“Gabe quickly became a cherished part of our Foodwise Kids family with his glowing energy and positive attitude,” says Astrid Bonilla, Foodwise’s Youth Education Manager. “We can always trust him to care for our students and ensure that every child on a field trip feels safe, welcomed, and included. We are so grateful for all the incredible work he continues to do with our education department.” Meet Gabe.

Where does your interest in food come from?

I have been involved in cooking from a young age, thanks to my family. Both of my parents have been vegetarians for far longer than I have been around, so growing up and cooking different recipes of all cuisines with them has given me a different outlook on the ways I view food. I also have my sister to thank for my continued interest in food as a young adult. Her studies in food science have been a wellspring of knowledge for how our food system operates, and her interest and commitment to Foodwise were my entry into the community.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering with Foodwise?

I’m currently working as an EMT in Alameda County. When I’m not on shift, I try to spend as much time with friends and family as I can. I also love to rock climb, find new places to run, and volunteer at the Order of Malta Clinic in Oakland.

Why are you choosing to volunteer with us at this time?

I have really enjoyed being able to talk about the origins of produce and foods with farmers, and teaching kids about the importance of broadening their horizons and trying new foods, as well as being more aware of the agricultural systems around them in California.

What has been most rewarding about your experience with Foodwise?

I’ve loved leading field trip groups through the market. I was fortunate to be able to attend field trips at farmers markets around the Bay Area growing up. Having that formative experience as a kid and being able to pass it on to the next generation has been a deeply gratifying and enjoyable experience.

What does Foodwise mean to you?

I felt a strong sense of community in Foodwise within a short time of getting involved. I have had the pleasure of making so many new friends and connections within Foodwise while educating others on the importance of sustainable and local food systems.

Any favorite farmers market foods or home meal prep tips you want to share?

I have certainly acquired a taste for persimmons and pomegranates during the fall and winter months of the market. Still, my favorite dish we have been able to prepare is the Brie Grilled Cheese with Delicata Squash Soup!
