Foodwise relies on volunteers and interns to help with education programs and other activities that help fulfill our mission to grow thriving communities through the power and joy of local food. Learn more about internships here and volunteer opportunities here. You can also sign up for our next volunteer orientation on June 8, 2024, here.

As a Foodwise Kids volunteer, Concie Tarantino shares her love of cooking with our elementary school market shoppers at our weekday Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

“Concie has supported Foodwise Kids and is a natural leader for her small group of students in cooking seasonal recipes like apple crumbles, citrus salads and cauliflower fried rice,” says Foodwise Kids and Families Manager Nesley Rojo. “She dedicates her time and talent to nurturing the next generation of eaters and supports our team of interns and staff. Every week Concie steps into our bustling kitchen, ready to ignite sparks of curiosity and creativity in the young minds gathered around her. With patient guidance and infectious enthusiasm, she transforms each cooking session into a journey of discovery for our young students!” Meet Concie.

Foodwise: Where does your food interest come from?

Concie: I’ve always enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, especially with my kids when they were younger.

Foodwise: What do you do when you aren’t volunteering for Foodwise?

Concie: I enjoy spending time with my family, grandchildren, and friends.

Foodwise: Why did you choose to volunteer with us at this time?

Concie: I was looking to try something new and fill some of my spare time since I retired. Foodwise Kids appealed to me.

Foodwise: What has been most rewarding about your experience with Foodwise?

Concie: Helping to support the Foodwise community and getting to meet and learn about the people I encounter when I volunteer.

Foodwise: What does Foodwise mean to you?

Concie: Foodwise offers me the opportunity to connect with a larger community in San Francisco. Volunteering helps to broaden my perspective.

Foodwise: Any favorite farmers market foods or home meal prep tips you want to share?

Concie: Definitely the fresh fruits and vegetables! Two of my favorite things to make are asparagus quesadillas and apple galettes, both simple and delicious dishes.
