Meet Our Team: Sheree Bishop

January 23, 2025

Meet one of the newest members of our team, Sheree Bishop, who joined us in September 2024 as Foodwise’s Communications Coordinator, supporting marketing and communications at Foodwise.

Tell us a bit about you, your background, and what brought you to Foodwise?

I have a professional background in journalism and marketing, both careers that align with my love for writing and storytelling. When I saw that Foodwise was hiring, I saw an opportunity to connect my passion for food and my appreciation for farmers with my work.

What does your work at Foodwise look like in action?

On a typical day, you can find me taking photos or filming videos in the market and writing up social media posts. From time to time, I reach out to sellers to write articles and collect information to update our website. I also build our weekly e-letter, working with our market and education teams. In general, my work at Foodwise includes content creation, event promotion, website upkeep, and making sure our online community has an updated and accurate look at what’s going on in the market.

What inspires or motivates you about your work?

I’m inspired by each and every person that I get to meet, interview, or spotlight through our communications. All of the farmers and chefs who have a wealth of knowledge about what they grow and sell, all of the volunteers who are dedicated to giving back, and all of the staff who pour their expertise into the different aspects of our farmers markets and education programs. Every day, I’m excited to help reflect all the different walks of life that bring people to the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and Mission Community Market. This is a truly beautiful and abundant pocket of our Bay Area community, and I’m inspired by the people who make it happen.

What’s something that you wish people understood better about Foodwise’s work?

If you’re based in the Bay Area and you want to shop small, our social media and our website are both great places to start. It’s like an interactive, online directory of small, local food businesses near you!  Engaging with our posts through commenting, liking, or following tags to the pages and websites of each farmer and food maker is an important step toward showing your support for local food businesses.

What do you do to recharge outside of work?

I rotate between my hobbies. Sometimes I write poems and short stories, other times I use my new sewing machine to make garments and projects, or I’ll sit down with a novel and a cozy video game.

Do you have any favorite farmers market tips you can share?

All of the recipes on our website are shoppable in the farmers market! No need to dig through the internet or stop at different places for all of your ingredients.

What does “food wisdom” mean to you?

Capitalism encourages us to see food as a simple item or as calories to count, rather than as a source of joy, culture, and community. To me, food wisdom is developing an understanding of food outside of this capitalistic standard. I grew up going to farmers markets with my grandparents, where neighbors and friends would sell corn, yams, breadfruit, ackee, apples, and anything in season and available. It’s so important to see the faces of the people who are responsible for your food, and I would argue it’s even more important to learn the names and histories behind what you eat. Developing food wisdom is a lifelong process that allows us to understand food as more than an object that you buy in a store.

Anything else you want to share?

If you can name it, Foodwise is on it: Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Bluesky, are the social media networks that we’re the most active on. We’re always looking for ways to let people know about the wonderful options available at the farmers market. Connect with us!
