Intern Spotlight: Rosemary Segura and Kelly Zhang

June 9, 2026

Foodwise relies on volunteers and interns to help us fulfill our mission to champion an equitable and sustainable Bay Area community through farmers markets and education programs. Learn more about internships here and volunteer opportunities here.

Thank you to Education Interns Rosemary Segura and Kelly Zhang, who both joined the Foodwise team to support our Seasonal Spotlight program in August 2025 through SFSU College Corps. Rosemary and Kelly prepared and shared thousands of recipe samples with  shoppers at our Ferry Plaza and Mission farmers markets. Kelly also helped elementary school children explore the farmers market during Foodwise Kids field trips.

“I loved having Rosemary and Kelly as part of our Seasonal Spotlight team,” says Culinary Program Manager Naomi Webb. “Rosemary brought such a fun, outgoing energy and was great at connecting with people. She collected an amazing amount of surveys for the program and made a real impact. Kelly was always ready to jump in and help with whatever was needed. Her dependable attitude and flexibility made her such a valued contributor, both to Seasonal Spotlight and Foodwise Kids.”

Meet Rosemary and Kelly.

Where does your interest in food come from?

Rosemary: I’ve always loved food. I come from a Mexican family, and our love language tends to be making food for our loved ones. It’s a language that doesn’t need words or translation. Any meal can translate to “I love you.” A full belly equals a full heart.

Kelly: My interest in food stems from my family and the environment I am exposed to. My mom has been a guiding influence in my interests surrounding food, from accompanying her on grocery shopping trips, watching her cook, visiting fruit-picking farms, and helping her in her garden. I feel connected to food, and the interest grows as I interact with people who share these experiences, and it enhances my curiosity about the energies and efforts of bringing good food to the table.

What do you do when you aren’t interning for Foodwise?

Rosemary: I enjoy arts and crafts. One of my majors is Studio Art, so lately I’ve been in the ceramic studio. I love making things with my hands. And seeing it become a full product by the end.

Kelly: Aside from interning at Foodwise, I am a college student in my fourth year studying Business Analytics. Most of my time is spent on studying, working on projects, and doing assignments. When I am not schooling, I like to take a break from the screen by going out with family and friends and just touching some grass. Through Foodwise, I have learned different ways to prepare seasonal produce, so some weekends I spend time making it and sharing it with my family.

Why are you choosing to intern with Foodwise at this time?

Rosemary: I’m choosing to volunteer with Foodwise because I believe in its mission to make healthy food accessible. Everyone deserves to eat well.

Kelly: Choosing to intern at Foodwise felt like it would build on top of my previous experiences volunteering at food distribution and food banks in underserved communities. It’s also a chance to explore and learn about a different platform for addressing food insecurity that is empowering the community not only with what to eat and when, but where to find good food and how to make the best of it.

What has been most rewarding about your experience with Foodwise?

Rosemary: The most rewarding experience is being able to communicate with my community in Spanish and really connect with them. And bridge potential language barriers. Doesn’t matter where they’re from, they all deserve to eat healthy and have access to resources. I’m just glad I can be part of it.

Kelly: It is quite thrilling to see people get excited about food, but it is most rewarding when I learn that people get curious and try to apply what they learn from engaging with the farmers market and its programs. I learn so much from interacting with the community at the farmers market, whether it is their experiences with the seasonal produce, the questions or resources they ask for, or the fun facts and magnet puns we interns get to share at the Seasonal Spotlight.

What does Foodwise mean to you?

Rosemary: Foodwise will always hold a special place in my heart. Being able to work in so many communities has been wonderful. The mission to make healthy food accessible and equitable is wonderful. And I’m just glad to be part of it.

Kelly: Foodwise is nourishment and nurture. It is a space where I get to meet people of unique histories, each with some knowledge or insight to share. Foodwise is special in the way that everyone is united by a shared commitment surrounding food, regardless of where they are from, and are the pillars of support for one another in every way possible.

Any favorite farmers market foods or home meal prep tips you want to share?

Rosemary: Meal prep can feel like a hassle and repetitive. But if you meal prep with friends, exchange some Tupperware of food. That way you’re trying new and you’re not eating the same meal every day

Kelly: My favorite market foods are all the produce in season right now, especially the mulberries and microgreens! I’m also a fan of the vanilla yogurt from Alexandre Family Farm and Acme Bread Company’s sourdough bread. Sometimes, I like to strain the yogurt at home and enjoy it with toast, a drizzle of honey, and fruits.
