Intern Spotlight: Christian Rodriguez

July 30, 2024

Foodwise relies on volunteers and interns to help with education programs, and other activities that help fulfill our mission to grow thriving communities through the power and joy of local food. Learn more about internships here and volunteer opportunities here. You can also sign up for our next volunteer orientation on September 4, 2024, here.

Christian Rodriguez joined Foodwise in fall 2023 through the College Corps program at SFSU, supporting our Foodwise Kids programming and other activities through the fall, spring, and summer (including starring in the occasional Instagram Reel). “Christian always showed up to Foodwise Kids field trips with a warm smile and good energy,” says Foodwise’s Youth Education Manager Marcelo Clark. “Christian played a crucial role in the Foodwise Kids’ education program, bringing fresh ideas and energy to every session. He helped design and implement engaging activities that teach children about nutrition and healthy eating habits. His involvement ensured the program remained dynamic and effective, fostering a love for wholesome food among young participants.” Meet Christian.

Foodwise: Where does your food interest come from?

Christian: I’ve been volunteering at Foodwise Kids since August 2023, and I started volunteering here because of my interest in food and working with at-risk communities. Food has this amazing way of making you feel comforted. Growing up as a first-gen kid with immigrant parents, I didn’t get to see my parents very often. I started to find that cooking their meals made me feel closer to them. If I could whip up dishes the way my grandma and mom did, I felt like they were right there with me. Now that I’ve moved out of my parents’ house in South Los Angeles, cooking meals that remind me of home is one of the best ways I can connect with them when I miss them.

Foodwise: What do you do when you aren’t interning for Foodwise?

ChristianI spend most of my time pursuing my Psychology degree and getting to know all of the best coffee shops in San Francisco. I also enjoy spending my time outdoors and moving my body as much as possible.

Foodwise: Why did you choose to intern with us at this time?

ChristianI chose to volunteer and extend my time at Foodwise because of the confidence and skills I’ve gained. I believe I can create an exceptional experience for the kids who visit. It’s more than just volunteering; it feels like a responsibility to give back to the community. Coming from a background similar to theirs, I can connect with them on a deeper, more meaningful level. These kids deserve someone who truly understands them and is passionate about making their experience as enriching as possible.

Christian: What has been most rewarding about your experience with Foodwise?

Christian: The connections I’ve made with the team have been the most rewarding part of this journey. The individuals who bring Foodwise to life inspire me with their hope and compassion, making me believe that the world can slowly become a better place. Their dedication and positivity remind me daily that, together, we can make a real difference.

Christian: What does Foodwise mean to you?

ChristianFoodwise is a special place where I can be myself and grow every day. It’s where I can leave behind the worries of the world and focus on creating the best experiences for the kids who come on field trips and for the team I work with. It’s a place where I find both personal and professional satisfaction, making each day fulfilling and meaningful.

Foodwise: Any favorite farmers market foods or home meal prep tips you want to share?

Christian: A recent favorite of mine has been shishito peppers. While peppers are a staple in many Mexican dishes and sauces, their intense heat can sometimes upset my stomach. However, baking shishito peppers in the oven or sautéing them with a little oil in a pan offers a fantastic alternative for those who love the flavor of peppers without the overwhelming spice.
