G.L. Alfieri Retires from Farmers Markets
January 30, 2025
This week we say a very bittersweet goodbye to G.L. Alfieri Farms, a legacy farm that has sold at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Markets since the market started in 1993. Farmer Gary Alfieri tells us this decision to retire was a hard one to make, but ultimately the best one for him and his business.
Always generous with samples, the Alfieri family have shared their love for growing amazing fruits and nuts with our market community for over 30 years. On the regular, we have gotten calls from people who have visited the market, asking where they can buy more of their legendary chocolate-covered almond brittle. We all are sad to see them go, but we wish Gary and his sister Cindy all the best as they make this momentous life change.
Please stop by the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturday, February 1, to stock up on their premium nuts and dried fruits and say goodbye to them in person. Gary shared this message for all of you who have been fans and supporters of his products at the Ferry Plaza over the years.
To our customers:
After more than 30 years of participating in San Francisco farmers markets, it is time for us to call it a day. Saturday, February 1, 2025, will be our final day at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.
So few small family farms exist anymore, with only 4% of the entire US population now engaged in farming. Farmers markets are truly one of the best ways to connect everyone to this vital, but diminishing, way of life. We have been so fortunate to sell directly to consumers at the markets and share our amazing fruits and nuts with everyone.
Our family has farmed in the California Central Valley for almost 100 years, but as the landscape there is quickly changing, we are also feeling the need to adapt to that change and move into our next chapter.
Our customers have become our friends throughout the years and we are grateful to each of them. We have learned from you all, and hope we have been able to share a few insights about farming with you as well throughout our time at the markets.
Thank you for supporting us all these years.
Sincerely,
Gary Alfieri
