Mulberries

Mulberries are native to Asia and North America, with over 100 different varieties growing in the United States, ranging from whitish to deep purple, and tiny to a few inches long. They’re also packed with essential nutrients, including calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamin C.
These delicate berries are difficult to pick and only harvested when perfectly ripe. Due to their brief harvesting season and intensive labor needs, mulberries are a rare treat that are not typically grown commercially. After harvesting, mulberries’ shelf life is at most a week, and their delicateness makes them difficult to transport long distances, which is why they are rarely found outside of farmers markets. Mulberries are a deep purplish red and their flavor is a perfect balance of sweet and tart. They’re fantastic in muffins and make a great homemade wine.
