Fermentation Workshop with June Jo Lee, Readers to Eaters
Saturday, September 17, 2022, 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm
In celebration of Food Literacy Month, join us for a kid-friendly fermentation workshop, featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Bring the whole family as author June Jo Lee reads from her new children’s picture book biography, Sandor Katz and the Tiny Wild, and makes “kraut-chi” from the recipe in the book, which Kirkus Reviews says is “a triumphant celebration of food and community.”
A book signing will follow at Book Passage bookstore inside the Ferry Building Marketplace at 11:30 am. June Jo will also sign her debut picture book, Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix, winner of the American Library Association Sibert Honor for Most Distinguished Informational Book, and its new Spanish edition, El chef Roy Choi y su remix de la comida callejera.
In addition to her writing, June Jo is a food ethnographer studying how America eats for Google and other organizations. She co-founded Readers to Eaters, a publisher promoting food literacy through stories about our diverse food cultures. She grew up trans-nationally between Seoul, Palo Alto, and Austin, eating her mom’s alien kimchi. She now lives in San Francisco.
All demos take place in the Foodwise Classroom (under the tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public with recipes and samples for all.
