Volunteer of the Month: J.D. Zamfirescu
May 1, 2014
CUESA’s Volunteer of the Month program recognizes the dedication and work of some of our most active volunteers. CUESA relies on volunteers to help with education programs, special events, public outreach, and other activities that help fulfill our mission to cultivate a sustainable food system. Info Booth volunteer J.D. Zamfirescu first visited the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in 2001, and since moving to the Bay Area, it’s been a regular destination for him. He started volunteering for CUESA in the summer of 2013 to explore his passion for food, deepen his interest in agriculture and food systems, and meet others with similar interests. “J.D. always has a positive attitude at the Info Booth and does everything he’s asked to do and more,” says Info Booth Coordinator Melanie Bourgeois. Meet J.D.
CUESA: Where does your interest in food come from?
J.D.: My early interest in food came from my mother, who brought me as a child every Saturday to the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City, where I grew up. I made friends with some of the farmers and discovered the deliciousness of fresh, sustainably grown produce. Since my wife and I moved back to the Bay Area in 2007, we’ve been constantly exploring new ingredients, new recipes, new restaurants, and new food ideas. We’re consistently impressed by the care, passion, and love in the Bay Area food community.
CUESA: What do you do when you aren’t volunteering for CUESA?
J.D.: I run a local event called Workshop Weekend, where kids and adults come to take short workshops on DIY topics like cake decorating, 3D printing, making ice cream with liquid nitrogen, programming, robotics, aquaponics, and many others. At Workshop Weekend and elsewhere, I teach programming and electronics.
CUESA: What is your favorite part about volunteering with CUESA?
J.D.: I love meeting the farmers, CUESA staff, and the other volunteers. Everyone has a great story to tell, and it’s good to feel included and a part of the community. I also love helping people with recommendations for tasty treats and breakfast options. Volunteering at the Info Booth in particular is great for many reasons (Melanie among them!) but also because it gives me an excuse to come to the market early and explore before the lunch rush.
CUESA: Do you have an insider market tip or a favorite produce item at the market right now?
J.D.: I’m a strawberry fanatic, so I’m very excited that strawberry season is in full swing now. I’m also really, really excited for the beginning of cherry season. So delicious!
