Culinary Program Internship 

Foodwise is a nonprofit organization dedicated to growing thriving communities through the power and joy of local food. Our vision is to inspire a world that nourishes all people, local economies, and the living earth. Foodwise seeks seasonal interns to support our Foodwise culinary program. 

Overview 

The Culinary Program Intern will be responsible for assisting the Culinary Program Manager in the implementation of a new education program at Foodwise’s Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and Mission Community Market, Tuesdays-Saturdays. The programming involves three main components: culinary sampling and advice booth, weekly cooking demos, and monthly California Crop of the Month (CCM) Festivals. 

Duties 

  • Culinary Advice Booth + seasonal sampling (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays): Assist the Culinary Program Manager in preparing seasonal recipes and providing culinary advice that highlights the CCM each month at every Foodwise market (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, year round; and Thursday afternoons at Mission Community Market, March-November). 
  • Weekly Saturday cooking demos: Assist the Culinary Program Manager in implementing weekly Saturday cooking demos that feature local chefs to highlight seasonal produce 
  • California Crop of Month Festivals: Once a month, a festival will be held at both the Mission Community Market and Ferry Plaza Farmers market to highlight the CCM. Interns will support in the development and implementation of festival-related activities 
  • Assist in managing volunteers by delegating tasks as agreed upon with the Culinary Program Manager 
  • Work with Foodwise staff on program development and documentation 
  • Make and implement suggestions for program improvement  
  • Assist cross-departmentally with other programs such as Foodwise Kids and Teens  

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of/passion for cooking, nutrition education, sustainable agriculture, and farmers markets 
  • A friendly, outgoing nature; excellent oral communication and customer service skills 
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work well with others 

Hours and Duration 

15-20 hours per week, starting as early as March 11, 2025, until at least May 31 or August 30. The intern must be available to work Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 2 pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm. 

Terms

The Foodwise Culinary Program Intern reports to the Foodwise Culinary Program Manager. Foodwise will provide training as needed. Interns will receive a stipend of $150/week, in addition to the option of receiving academic credit, upon completion of the internship. Interns will also learn about sustainable food systems, become familiar with the farmers market, and gain teaching experience and exposure to the nonprofit working environment.  They will also have access to leftover produce from classes, and discounts or free tickets to some Foodwise events. 

All interns are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination due to the nature of working closely and in-person with youth.
