Reem Assil, Reem's

Saturday, January 16, 2016, 10:30 am - 11:15 am

Stop by the CUESA Classroom for a cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

Reem Assil founded Reem’s with a passion for the flavors of Arab street-corner bakeries and the vibrant communities where they’re located. Growing up in a Palestinian-Syrian household, Reem was surrounded by the aromas and tastes of food from the homeland and the connections they evoked of her heritage, family, and community. Reem’s features the warm hospitality of Arab culture and offers a culinary discovery of the flavors, aromas, and techniques of local bakeries in Damascus, Beirut, and Jerusalem. Their breads and dishes are inspired by classic street foods enjoyed daily throughout the Arab world, and made with California love. Before dedicating herself to a culinary career, Reem worked for a decade as a community and labor organizer, and brings the warmth of community to all her events. She has worked with the Bay Area’s esteemed cooperative bakery Arizmendi Bakery & Pizzeria, Grace Street Catering, Local Flavors, and several local chefs. In 2014 she was accepted to the competitive food business incubator program, La Cocina. All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
