Summer Cobblers, Crisps, and Crumbles Contest at CUESA's Jack London Square Farmers Market

Sunday, July 9, 2017, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Select your favorite summer fruit and pull out your best cobbler, crisp, or crumble recipe! If you are an amateur baker, you’re invited to submit your best cobbler at CUESA’s Summer Jam at Jack London Square Farmers Market in Oakland on Sunday, July 9.

Summer is upon us, which means locally grown berries, cherries, and stone fruit abound at our farmers markets, ripe for luscious filling topped with a buttery crumble. To showcase the best of the season from our local farms, your cobbler, crisp, or crumble must feature one or more California-grown summer fruits or vegetables from our local farmers as the primary ingredient. Any other fruits, nuts, or vegetables should be seasonal.

What is the Difference?

Cobbler: A baked, deep-dish fruit dessert topped with a thick biscuit crust sprinkled with sugar
Crisp: A dessert of fruit topped with a crumbly, sweet pastry mixture often with nuts and/or oats and baked until browned and crisp
Crumble: A British dessert in which raw fruit is topped with a crumbly pastry mixture and baked.

Check out our seasonality charts to find out what’s locally available, do your shopping at CUESA’s weekly farmers markets, and tap into your old family recipes for inspiration.

The top three winners will receive a selection of foodie prizes, including bakery gift certificates, sweet treats from local bakeries, and more! The winners’ recipes will also be announced in the CUESA e-letter. Prizes have been generously donated by Fournée Bakery, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop, Starter Bakery, Market Hall Foods, Tart Oakland, and Miette.

Bakers will be judged by our panel of cobbler experts, pastry chefs, and local food writers on appearance, texture, taste, and use of local, seasonal ingredients. Creativity and originality will also be considered. Our esteemed panel of experts includes:

  • Jennifer Millar, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop

  • Gloria Polo, East Bay Community Recovery Project
