Gustavo Romero, Calavera

Sunday, July 23, 2017, 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm

Join us at CUESA’s Jack London Square Farmers Market in Oakland  for a Market to Table Cooking Demonstration with Gustavo Romero of Calavera featuring the seasonal bounty of the Jack London Square Farmers Market.

Calavera is in Uptown Oakland’s The Hive, led by Executive Chef Gustavo Romero. Originally from Mexico, Romero draws his inspiration from his native country’s rich culinary heritage. Romero, who was most recently Chef de Cuisine at Marin Restaurant in Minneapolis, previously worked as Executive Chef at San Francisco’s Credo restaurant and The Julia Morgan Ballroom. Romero was also Executive Chef of Lulu on the Grove in Miami. In 2013, he appeared on Food Network’s “Chef Wanted” with celebrity chef Anne Burrell and won his competition. Romero is excited to be in the Bay Area, and says he’s always wanted to cook the food of his native country. “I’m passionate about the opportunity to present Mexican food in a modern way, and I’ excited to be at Calavera to further explore this fascinating cuisine”, said Romero.

Calavera opened in August 2015 by owners Chris Pastena, Jessica Sackler and Michael Iglesias. Calavera is a creative regional Mexican restaurant dedicated to Mexican artistry in all forms. Calavera’s seasonal cuisine celebrates Mexico’s rich culinary traditions, from pre-Columbian to the modern gastro movement sweeping Mexico’s major cities. The restaurant also features inventive cocktails, with one of the country’s largest selections of tequilas and mezcals, and an ambitious wine program.

All demos take place at the CUESA Classroom (adjacent to the info booth at Broadway & Water Street) and are free and open to the public, with samples and recipes for all.
