George Meza, Onsen, featuring Eatwell Farm

Stop by the CUESA Classroom for a cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and highlighting one of our market sellers.

George Meza is a California native with an international upbringing. His foray into the restaurant world began in Napa Valley where he learned from and thrived by using lush California ingredients as the centerpieces for his dishes. Under the mentorship of chef Hiro Sone of Napa’s Terra, George worked his way up through the ranks of the kitchen. Prior to settling in the Bay Area in 2012, George attended Napa Valley cooking school and staged in Michelin-starred kitchens Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin and the Bay Area’s celebrated Manresa and Saison. In 2016 he partnered with Sunny Simmons and Caroline Smith to oversee the kitchen at their forthcoming urban bathhouse and restaurant concept, Onsen. At Onsen, George draws on his nuanced background in Asian flavors to present vegetable-focused small plates complete with layered flavors and an emphasis on local produce.

One of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market founding farms, Eatwell Farm grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and sells many specialty products made from the lavender and other herbs they grow. The farm also sells pasture-raised eggs. Besides selling at the farmers market, Eatwell Farm operates a sizable community supported agriculture (CSA) program. To conserve energy and reduce pollution, they use recycled vegetable oil to run the diesel irrigation pump and delivery truck.

All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
