Genetically Engineered Salmon: What's Next?

Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The FDA has approved the first genetically modified animal for human consumption, the AquAdvantage salmon—without a labeling requirement. This panel of experts will discuss the implications. What could happen to wild salmon populations should the engineered salmon escape? What’s in store for salmon eaters and the people whose livelihoods depend on the ocean? Can aquaculture be a sustainable way of meeting the world’s growing demand for salmon? What can seafood lovers do to safeguard the health of our fisheries? What’s happening with the lawsuit to stop AquAdvantage from hitting the market? And what other genetically engineered food animals may be on the horizon?

The event will take place in the Port Commission Hearing Room, 2nd floor of the Ferry Building, San Francisco.

The talk will be followed by a reception with refreshments from the farmers market.
