Charles Phan, The Slanted Door
Saturday, February 18, 2017, 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm

Stop by the CUESA Classroom for a cooking demo featuring the seasonal bounty of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. The demo will be followed by a book signing, thanks to our friends at Book Passage.
Charles Phan is the Executive Chef and Owner of the Slanted Door family of restaurants. Born in Da Lat, Vietnam, the Phan family relocated just before the fall of Saigon, and spent two years in Guam before finally settling in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1977. A former architecture student at UC Berkeley (and a one-time software salesman), Phan opened his first restaurant, The Slanted Door, on Valencia Stret in the Mission District in 1995. It was quickly recognized for its unique Vietnamese flavor. The restaurant relocated from its original space to its current location in the historic Ferry Building in 2004. Phan’s other restaurants are: Out the Door, South at SFJazz, and Hard Water. All are located in San Francisco. In 2004, Phan won the James Beard Award for “Best Chef: California.” In 2014 The Slanted Door was awarded “Outstanding Restaurant.” In addition to his awards and accolades, Phan is a leader in the San Francisco food community and has participated in countless charitable events, including CUESA’s. His first cookbook “Vietnamese Home Cooking” was published by Ten Speed Press in 2013 and won the IACP Chefs and Restaurants cookbook award that year. His second cookbook “The Slanted Door: Modern Vietnamese Food” was published in 2014, also by Ten Speed Press.
All demos take place in the CUESA Classroom (under the white tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.
